The Secret Honey Gem: Manuka Honey

Manuka honey is made just a little bit differently than the rest. It is the natural remedy to heal cuts and burns, common burns and soothe acute sinus problems. Manuka honey is native to New Zealand, but can be found at your local health foods store. Ensure its raw with few preservatives.

And while Manuka comes in honey's traditional form, many like to add variety:

  • Raw or pasteurized
  • Filtered or unfiltered
  • Comb (with the edible beeswax inside) liquid, or whipped
  • Local or imported

Its benefits increasingly prove its healing powers (and it has quite the laundry list of healing powers).

"Yes, Manuka honey contains sugar, but at a range of GI 54-59 it has a lower glycemic index than other natural sweeteners. This means that it does not spike blood sugar as much as other foods containing sugar or sweeteners. For example, white sugar has a GI of 68, and watermelon is 72, both of which are substantially higher than Manuka honey." [1]

Manuka honey is a natural anti-inflammatory, which helps improve skin tone. Its inflammatory properties allow it to aid in digestion - so it's perfect as an additive in your evening tea. A study conducted on rats suggested that Manuka honey had a protective effect against ulcers.

Whether you're looking to heal from the outside or the inside, Manuka honey will help do the trick. Happy healing!
